Not unfairly, the Lonely Planet for Taiwan reports that 'Taipei is not known for its architectural excellence - many of the buildings have all the glamour of an egg carton.' Against this description, the Far Eastern Plaza hotel holds its own. With four hundred rooms, small for this polluted, overcrowded and expensive regional economic powerhouse, the six classes of accommodation differ mainly in size, although the upper categories boast higher ceilings and more windows looking out over the sprawling menagerie of surprisingly low rise development. Spring for a Plaza Suite with an extra window to enjoy the view from the bathtub, but don't despair if egg carton architecture is not your thing. Every bathroom has a mini TV with the more expensive rooms sporting LCD screens, while the entry level offers noticeably low-tech mid nineties technology. The décor is unmistakably Shangri-La, muted olives, gold and cream and light on the soft-furnishings. The Song dynasty art works and sculptures are fine additions.

Upstairs the roof-top Jacuzzi is a relaxing way to unwind where you can lose yourself in the views of the grave dotted green hills surrounding the city. The Li Bai Lounge on the sixth floor offers a similar view but marred by the surrounding buildings. The smell of smoke here is as pervasive as in much of a city of smokers where the habit is not outlawed in public places. The Yi Café serves up four buffet spreads a day keeping the chefs busy and the locals coming back for more. Standing proud is the Chocolate Fountain at afternoon tea time, when you get a mix up of Chinese dim sum, English high tea and Japanese sushi. Take an atrium table to watch young and funky Taiwanese riding the escalators through the shopping mall, all shaggy hair, baggy trousers and slim shoulders. The Far Eastern Plaza won the best hotel in Taipei from 1999 - 2003 and has few competitors of its caliber in this category
