Amanwella occupies a picture-perfect spot on the southern Sri Lankan coast, close to the village of Tangalle. Minimalist in design, the focus here is on the luscious surroundings; palm-fringed beaches, sparkling ocean and rock-hewn temples abound.

The facilities

The main pool area is beautifully appointed, with two large sun terraces and plentiful loungers. There's a laid-back Beach Club, an open-air pavilion for home-made granitas and ice-cream. The main restaurant serves a mix of Sri Lankan and European cuisine, with a focus on freshly caught seafood (meals are flexible and can be taken anywhere; in the privacy of the suite or even on the beach).

The spa menu is sublime, offering a range of treatments and massages that can be taken in-room or at various, tranquil spots amid the coconut groves. Staff organise fantastic "nature tours", either to visit the local village, to see the monastic Mulgirigala rock temple or to explore the Bundala national park.

The rooms

Each of Amanwella's 30 suites is absolutely luxurious, sharing the same pared-down, contemporary style as its communal areas. They all have private plunge pools and terraces, king-size beds, spacious living areas and free-standing bathtubs as standard.
