Review of FincaHotel Can Coll, by Jeroen Bergmans

Boutique hotel Can Coll is housed in a charming 18th-century finca from which the Coll family once managed their large estate of orange and olive groves outside the pretty Mallorcan town of Soller. These days German couple Maike and Daniel are lords of the manor and offer a warm welcome to couples and young families with their adorable Labrador Max.

Soller town itself is only a 10-minute drive away and the beach at Puerto Soller is a mere five minutes more. Can Coll is also popular with hikers throughout the year as the boutique hotel sits beneath the spectacular Tramuntana Mountains. The trek to the village of Deia, famed for its community of artists, takes two to three hours.

The facilities

The boutique hotel is decorated in a riot of bright pastel colours with original artwork by local Mallorcan painters. Can Coll's front door is adorned with a huge mural of cornucopia and angels and beyond it the library is hung with surreal canvases by Gustavo, an artist from nearby Arta. The boutique hotel has no spa, but spa treatments including facials, massages, manicures and pedicures can be pre-arranged via email before you arrive.

The boutique hotel's breakfast room and its adjacent kitchen epitomise the relaxed, home-from-home atmosphere of Can Coll. A breakfast of fresh figs, orange juice, and home-made marmalade is served any time and guests can order light salads and simple pasta dishes throughout the day.

In the summer months, guests spend most of their time enjoying the Mallorcan sunshine in the large garden or beside the boutique hotel's pool which is surrounded by fragrant orange trees. Maike and Daniel often fire up the barbecue and guests can choose from fifty Mallorcan wines and whiskies from the boutique hotel's extensive cellar, known as La Bodega.

The rooms

Can Coll has nine rooms including three suites, all furnished with a bath and shower, hairdryer, satellite TV, Bose radio and air-conditioning. The boutique hotel's brand-new Limon Suite is the most spectacular as it has its own private garden, a huge bathroom and enough space to comfortably accommodate a small family.
