Hotel Espana is a true find, vibrant blend of architectural and design styles centrally located adjacent to La Rambla, the Gran Theatre del Liceu and the Gothic Quarter. Originally opened in 1859, the hotel was renovated by Catalan modernist Lluis Domenech i Montaner. Today, it blends contemporary minimalism and Montaner’s Art Nouveau flourishes with the classicism of the original 19th century opulence.

The facilities

The chic rooftop pool and terrace offer panoramic views of Old Town Barcelona. Bar Arnau, a posh little meeting place, takes its name from the enormous alabaster fireplace designed by Eusebi Arnau that dominates the room, which, characteristic of the hotel’s décor, combines contemporary lines with florid Modernism. Don’t miss the cathedral like dining from of La Fonda Espana. The walls here are mosaic and marble, with half-columns and lavish moulding: a gilded location for contemporary Spanish cuisine from the menu of three-Michelin-starred chef Martin Berasategui.
