Perched high on the cliffs of Hermanus is the magnificent Birkenhead House, the ultimate coastal retreat. This elegant beach house has sun-drenched deck chairs and fresh air galore, plus the chance to spot whales and endless views of the ocean.
The facilities
The restaurant provides daily lavish meals of seafood delicacies. The award-winning chefs create fresh, delicate menus using local game and fresh seafood. Birkenhead House also provides a split-level swimming pool, an infinity pool, a gym, two swimming beaches and spa treatments. Spectacular mountain trails and breathtaking cliff paths are in easy reach and showcase the Cape's gorgeous natural surroundings (host to one of Africa's most diverse ecosystems). It's a leisurely 40-minute stroll along a coastal path to the centre of the village.
The suites
Most of Birkenhead House's 11 sea-facing studio suites offer expansive vistas of Walker Bay and the distant Overberg Mountains. If you're lucky, from your window you'll spot the Southern Right whales that enter the sheltered waters every year to calve.
