Reid’s Palace Hotel is Maderia's cliff-top landmark and easily the island's grandest hotel. Founded by Scotsman William Reid just over a century ago, the hotel that bears his name sits atop the cliffs on the Bay of Funchal, not too far from the island's capital city. The rooms come with balconies or terraces complete with wicker tables and chairs; the three swimming pools mean there's no poolside crush, while afternoon tea is served in the lounge. Plenty of that golf malarkey nearby, of course.
