Review of Floris Suite Hotel, by Ramsey Qubein

In a shady palm-dotted location, this delightful hotel is packed with cosmopolitan panache and top-shelf quality, and what this hotel lacks in size and facilities, it makes up for in substantive style. This resort appeals to young urbanites and those averse to the big chain hotels.

The facilities

Despite its lack of a beach, the hotel does have a beach centre, with light meal and drink service, water sports rental and a dive centre. Philippe Starck light fixtures bring a touch of Manhattan to the Netherlands Antilles in the slate-gray lobby, and Dutch designer Jan des Bouvrie handled the furniture and interiors. It's an island twist on minimalist design (it is a member of the Design Hotels grouping after all).

The notable chef prepares daring regional cuisine from an open kitchen in a garden environment. The beach is a five-minute walk away, and chairs are provided for guests. On-site recreation centres on the pool, a small air-conditioned gym and a lighted tennis court at the entrance. Wireless internet access is available in the lobby, and two computer kiosks can also connect guests for a fee.

The rooms

A chic minimalist vein with Asian-inspired podium beds, rich wood accents, bright tropical colors, stone tile floors, thick duvets and throw pillows grace the spacious units. Armoires hold TVs, phones supply voice mail, and air-conditioning and ceiling fans provide climate control. Luxurious shower-only marble baths feature the works. Royal Suites mostly offer king beds and sleeper sofas, as well as nicely furnished kitchenettes. Loft Suites, with living areas downstairs and bedrooms up a flight of stairs, and two Imperial Suites, with two bedrooms, two baths and kitchenettes, are nice options for families.
