Hotel Overview

Review of Riad Samarkand, by Kayt Sukel

Mysterious, magical Marrakech - many say that the only way to truly experience life in the heart of the city's Medina is by staying in a riad, or traditional guest house. I concur, and one such captivating property is the Riad Samarkand, located right in the heart of the old city. You may wonder if you are lost as you wander the labyrinth of streets to reach the riad, but once you enter the large black door, you'll feel as though you've stepped into another world. Riad Samarkand manages to find the perfect balance of tradition, local décor and modern amenities to soothe even the most savage guest.

All of Riad Samarkand's suites are large, open and decorated in traditional Moroccan textiles and handicrafts including woolen coverlets, handmade rugs and incredible old-fashioned doors. The guest house is owned by a French couturier and it's easy to tell - the entire property is serene, sophisticated and utterly comfy. Common areas include an inviting dining room and a relaxed yet chic sitting room. Guests can also head up to the rooftop terrace to enjoy sun beds, a glass of wine or a far-reaching view of the Medina.

One of the best draws of the property is the riad's central garden. This lush, verdant space has a central fountain as well as a ten metre swimming pool for guests to enjoy. It's a perfect place to bask in Marrakech's abundance of sunshine after a hard day of bargaining in the souks. Though Riad Samarkand does not have a restaurant per se, meals can be served upon request in the dining room, the terrace or in your suite. The riad also has a small hammam, with a variety of spa and beauty services that can be booked with a day's notice. The small, dedicated staff takes each and every request to heart and goes out of their way to make sure that guests are 100% satisfied.

Riad Samarkand has five large, roomy suites that provide sensual comfort, traditional flourishes and access to the property's central garden. The smallest room, the Ispahan suite, lies on the ground floor. At 40 square metres, it boasts a double bed, large bathroom with tub and a private terrace that opens directly to the garden. The Damas suite is also on the ground floor. This room is slightly larger at 45 square metres and has the lovely touch of a traditional Moroccan bhou (sofa) where you can relax in opulent style.

On the first floor, the Pondichery suite is the only room that does not have its own terrace. But the 45 square metre space makes up for it with a lovely open fireplace. The last two suites, the Samarkand and Mazagran (75 square meters and 60 square meters, respectively), are the largest and loveliest of the riad's rooms. Up the winding staircase, guests can enjoy views of the garden from large terraces as well as gorgeous, airy rooms with high ceilings and sophisticated décor.
