Hotel Overview
Review of Seiyo Ginza Hotel, by Caroline Major
Pay attention as you stroll down the Ginza strip on your way back to the Seiyo Ginza. The Chanels, Chopards and Harry Winstons of the world will all be competing for your attention and you may well miss the discrete entrance to the hotel. You see, this hotel is accustomed to hosting those who prefer to be sub rosa. Celebrities and politicians have stayed here since long before the Park Hyatt’s of the city came along, and while at 20 years old you couldn’t consider her a grand dame by European standards, the Seiyo Ginza has probably quietly stolen this crown from the other contender, The Imperial, whose greying temples are no longer becoming.
Walk in past the fleet of late model black Mercedes, up the imposing staircase and into the lounge; there’s an air of quiet restraint percolating. Older couples take tea during the day and the room fills with the susurrus of gentlemen discussing the ways of the world. The sweet scent of fine cigars perfumes the air.
With earthy, olive walls set against dusky pink and sporting forest green accents, the rooms are designed for comfort. Plump tassled cushions and lamps with large shades make for a cozy night in when you want to escape the Tokyo action. It’s the sort of room where you would feel right to cozy up on the sofa with a DVD and order in. Perhaps a bit like going to stay at Grandma’s, with her floral print carpets and ‘shower you with attention’ consideration. Your butler will make sure you’re well looked after, attending to your meal service, your packing and anything else you might decide you need whilst in this luxury home away from home.
Bathrooms are typical of a hotel of this vintage. Creamy marble tiles render the bath, shower and vanity attractive without personality. There’s little exciting about gold fittings or cream marble but it is elegant and asks for none of your attention. These rooms are not fashionable but you can be guaranteed that you’ll want for nothing after spending a few days at this level of comfort - other than a little excitement.
