Monaco & Grand Canal Hotel 4 Stars

"Contemporary art and design meets classical elegance at this well-located luxury hotel with Grand Canal views."

Hotel Overview

Review of Monaco & Grand Canal Hotel, by The TI Review Team

The Hotel Monaco is a luxury hotel that looks out over Venice's Grand Canal. This enviable location also takes in one of the city's most iconic landmarks, the Church of Santa Maria della Salute, as well as the island of San Giorgio. All in all, then, a pretty prime spot.

The luxury hotel itself is no less impressive - a true Venetian grand dame, that has counted Casanova and Italian royalty among its past guests. It originally belonged to the Dandolo family, and hosted the first Ridotto Pubblico, an event where nobility and plebians alike could retire for pleasure and intrigue (see aformentioned guestlist).

The facilities

The lobby is formed from a huge glass atrium, bedecked with crystal chandeliers, flowers galore and the ubiquitous marble features. Designed by Milanese architect Piero Lissoni, it covers over the old garden courtyard and bridges the gap nicely between outdoor and indoor spaces. A chic glass bar area leads off it, and further still the Grand Canal terrace restaurant, one of the nicest places to dine in the city.

The rooms

The 99 rooms of this luxury hotel have a lot to live up to, considering the beautifully refurbished communal areas. They are not so lavish, rather comfortable, an ideal place to crash following the hustle and bustle of Venice. Each room is individually decorated, with a soothing, neutral palette. Flatscreen televsions, well-stocked minibars and decadent marble bathrooms feature in every one.

We'd recommend the canal-facing rooms above others; they are well worth the extra. For the ultimate indulgence, book a Grande Suite, which have private terraces and balconies.
