Micalo 4 Stars

"A funky, smart boutique hotel overlooking the Bay of Naples, with a contemporary, neutral palette and touches of Neapolitan artwork."

Hotel Overview

Review of Micalo, by Isabel Clift

A hotel that's as friendly and fun as it is stylish. Owned and co-designed by an Italian-English couple, Micalo offers the warmest of welcomes to Naples. Converted from an apartment block into a slick, modern hideaway, the hotel's small size and hands-on ownership makes every stay feel special. It's in a calm area of town neighbouring the American Consulate, but is still close to the action - the metro down the street will whizz you to the city centre in ten minutes.

The facilities

The clue's in the name - Micalo's Art Bar showcases the talent of young Neapolitan artists. When not admiring the work on the walls, drink tea, coffee or cocktails to fantastic views of Mount Vesuvius, or snack on authentic Italian cuisine from a small menu. Comfortable and buzzy, the bar's an ideal day-to-night hangout, and has a mezzanine level for more private get-togethers.

The rooms

Nine rooms are generously proportioned and all except two are duplex-style on funky split levels. Downstairs areas are for sleeping and lounging, while upstairs dressing areas have a wardrobe and bathroom. Modern decor is minimalistic with a beach-house feel - think sleek wooden floors, low beds and high airy spaces - while white stone bathrooms are totally zen. Wi-Fi and plasma TVs will keep tech fans happy, and luxury lovers will enthuse over the handmade bed linen and yummy Arran Aromatics toiletries. Pick one of the two sea-facing rooms for a fabulous blue view.
