Grotta Giusti Spa Hotel is a relaxing retreat in Monsummano, just a few kilometres away from Florence, Pisa and Lucca. It's a 19th-century villa, set in acres of private parkland and has been sympathetically restored to maintain an air of history and character.
The facilities
The main draw here is, of course, the thermal spa. There's a huge open-air thermal pool, steam bath grotto, fitness centre and numerous treatment rooms. There are also tennis courts on site, a freshwater pool and mapped out 'fitness walks' in the surrounding countryside. An 18-hole golf course lies a short distance away.
The rooms
Each of the 64 bedrooms and suites are decorated in a traditional Italian style - expect plenty of gilt and darkwood furniture, but nothing overbearing or heavy. Bathrooms are white marble with thermal water on tap.

La Veranda restaurant serves excellent, elaborate dishes with a traditional Tuscan slant. The spa cuisine is aimed at the health- and calorie-conscious and the gourmet menu serves gluttons and gourmands. The Bioaquam Cafe offers healthy lunches, snacks and herbal teas.
