Castello Del Nero is a beautifully restored 12th-century castle, that lives just outside Florence, in the rolling Tuscan hills. Its setting in the heart of Chianti makes it popular with vinophiles, a given, but it also attracts gourmets the world over for its impeccably prepared regional cuisine. Its former noble status can be seen in the original frescoes, vaulted ceilings and grandiose fireplaces.

The facilities

The restaurant is the main attraction here, serving Tuscan fare to a high-end standard. The wine list is equally good, with many stocked from neighbouring vineyards. There's also a chic terrace area which overlooks the outdoor pool, extensive manicured gardens and an ESPA-branded spa. For fitness fanatics, there's a gym (housed in the oldest part of the castle) and illuminated tennis courts.

Each of Castello Del Nero's 50 rooms is elegantly appointed, with five-star finishes. Every one is unique, with original features (like those stunning frescoed ceilings) and antique furnishings scattered throughout.
