Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Club 4 Stars

"A Hollywood-style Gothic castle, set in impressive grounds, this luxury hotel is a top choice for golf fanatics."

The Press Say

"The River Maigue and a barricade of trees conceal this Georgian-Gothic manor. Rooms with fireplaces, intricate woodwork, and pale walls await lodgers returning from an afternoon of falconry or a day on the golf course..." Conde Nast 10

Hotel Overview

Review of Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Club, by Matthew Barker

Limerick golfer's paradise with ample off-course diversions. Come for the golf by all means, but the recent opening of spa facilities and the understated old school charms of the Manor House, with its king-size rooms and Gallic-accented restaurant offers plenty of distractions away from the fairways, all watched over by a cheerful front-of-house team.

Dating from 1832, this neo-Gothic manor house was created by the Second Earl of Dunraven and his wife Lady Caroline Wyndham. Any hotel with such a strong sense of history and heritage inevitably faces a challenge when it comes to decorating its bedrooms but Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Club has some truly enchanting rooms that balance classic decorative elements with all the necessary modern amenities.

We recommend reserving one of the Staterooms (equivalent to a Junior Suite) on an upper floor facing either the gardens or the River Maigue. It is also worth considering the Presidential Suite as, unlike every other room type here, it has a fixed price all year round, making it particularly good value in the peak summer months.

Several dining options are available but we were most impressed by the Drawing Room, ideal for afternoon tea or pre-dinner aperitifs, and the Manor Oakroom Restaurant where the talented Head Chef prepares generously sized portions of locally influenced haute cuisine in sophisticated surroundings.

After a hearty breakfast, guests can enjoy a round of golf on the estate's private course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior. Adare Manor has hosted the Irish Open in both 2008 and 2009, a sure sign of the course's rising popularity amongst aficionados.

For those looking for a different challenge though, Adare also has archery, target shooting, trout fishing and falconry. We chose to spend an afternoon engaged in the latter. Our softly spoken guide Rosie came accompanied by Jake The Hawk, who displayed the kind of hunting instincts that made his ancestors so effective at producing rabbits for the Earl's dinner table.

Finally, the estate's French-style formal gardens are a visual treat well worth exploring at a leisurely pace. Look out for the indigenous North American trees, apparently in the 19th-century Irish aristocrats liked nothing better than to import young trees from across the Atlantic as a sign of their wealth and status. How fitting therefore to learn that the Manor's current owners, the Kane family, are themselves Americans who have since put down their own roots in Irish soil…
