Hotel Overview

Review of The Shelbourne, by Rory MacLean

In a dazzling conjuring trick, the historic Shelbourne has transformed itself for the 21st-century while remaining the finest traditional luxury hotel in Ireland. Stride in off St. Stephen's Green and stand at the heart of Dublin. To the right is the snug, legendary Horseshoe Bar, where generations of politicians, playwrights and Trinity College graduates have gathered to contemplate the joys and troubles of the world. To the left roars the bustling, happy Number 27 Lounge, the place to be seen and best cocktail bar in the Republic. Sip a Black Velvet (the Guinness and champagne cocktail was invented here in the 1870s), admire Victor Richardson's radiant pointillist murals, then stride on into reception's embrace.

Here too contemporary Irish art graces the walls - Cian McLoughlin, Louis le Brocquy, Barrie Cooke - beneath which the young and friendly staff pamper and tease every guest into good humour. A two-year, 100 million Euro refit has recreated this luxury hotel splendidly. John F Kennedy and Princess Grace once stayed here (although not at the same time). Peter O'Toole bathed in champagne just down the hall from the room where the Irish Constitution was drafted. With tall, graceful windows, resplendent chandeliers, decorative stained glass and savvy service, The Shelbourne's atmosphere is at once elegant, attentive and cheeky.

The rooms

All 265 rooms - including 19 suites - in this luxury hotel reflect a focus on quality. Original prints, plush sofas, Egyptian cotton bedding by Rivolta Carmignani, deep, tasselled pelmets and swagged curtains. Every room is designed from the same palette of colours: Imperial yellow, terracotta, mahogany. Proportions feel generous even in a basic Queen room; in the suites they approach sheer opulence. The polished marble bathrooms offer power showers and/or bath (depending on category) with sumptuous amenities by The White Company and Ermenegildo Zegna. High speed Internet access and plasma-screen television are standard. Fresh flowers, books on Irish history and a wind-up alarm clock add an individual touch. This luxury hotel is perfect for weekenders, gourmands and business travellers in need of pampering.
