The Tugu at Canggu (pronounced Chang-oo), far up a very long beach from madding Kuta, is as much an art gallery as it is a luxury hotel. It reflects the owners' passion for the romantic beauty of the art, history and culture of Java and Bali. Priceless Indonesian antiques adorn this luxury hotel, creating an out-of-the-ordinary ambience. It's then just a few steps away to the beach. The sands are grey and volcanic, the surf is less crowded and Kuta's bungy-jumpers, hair-braiders and endless, walking supermarket of hawkers are far away.
The rooms
My suite - one of 26 - has teak floors, an antique four-poster canopy bed, a separate massage area with a sunken circular tub-for-two, and windows opening towards the sea. Other Tugu accommodation includes the spectacular Le Mayeur Pavilion (honouring a celebrated 1920's Belgian expat painter) that is the favourite and frequent Bali resting place of Indonesia's former President Megawati Soekarnoputri.
