The Taj Chandela is a low building with many of the rooms built round the swimming pool. Guests are welcomed with a glass of tomato juice (unusual for India).
The bedrooms are decorated in very good taste. The bed, which unfortunately was hard and had a foam pillow, had a scattering of pretty brightly coloured silk cushions, as did the sofa. The floor was wooden, and a replica of a statue from one of the nearby temples was on the wall making the décor exceptional and not too corporate - a pleasant surprise.
The hotel shops were excellent - the bookshop had a remarkable range of books about India and the clothes shops produced made-to-measure clothes overnight.
Although dinner and cocktails were in the somewhat chilly garden, braziers warmed the surrounds and breakfast was served in a clearing in the woods. One word of warning: the Chandela boasts a "business centre" but the reality was a lap-top with a dial-up connection that consistently failed to connect.
