Vedema Resort 5 Stars

"This self-contained luxury resort is popular with families, built around a 15th-century winery, with ultra-attentive staff."

Hotel Overview

Review of Vedema Resort, by Kayt Sukel

Although many may consider a trip to Santorini to be all about the view, Vedema Resort near Megalohori lets you know there's much, much more to this island then just the caldera. This 45-suite holiday village offers visitors the kind of serene luxury that you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

This quiet, sunny resort village is built into the hills of Santorini's finest wine country - and on the foundation of a 400-year-old winery to boot. The property goes above and beyond when it comes to service. And in terms of activities, guests can explore the local area on mountain bikes free of charge, play tennis on the on-site court or simply while away the hours at the pool or Jacuzzi. Vedema Resort also has a fully-equipped fitness centre, sauna, Turkish bath facilities and a wonderful spa.

Vedema boasts several dining and bar options. The Pergola offers cuisine poolside from breakfast through dinner. Vinsanto, the main restaurant, offers a fantastic and creative Mediterranean-themed menu for dinner each night. Wine lovers will rejoice in Vedema's Canava Wine Bar, a lovely cave-like room, where guests can participate in wine tastings that highlight some of the best vintages of the region.

Honestly, Vedema has enough to do on-site that you might feel like you never want to leave. But for those who have the urge to wander, daily shuttle buses are available to Vedema's private beach as well as the town of Fira.

Vedema Resort has four suite types as well as a Presidential Villa on offer. The smallest room type, the Dorian, is actually quite spacious at 60 square meters and offers large, marble bathrooms as well as flat-screen satellite television and Internet access.

The Aegean Suite is slightly larger but also offers a sea view and private outdoor Jacuzzi. The Athenian Suite is ideal for families - this two bedroom suite has two bathrooms and plenty of room for the little ones to run amok. But for those who want an extra dose of luxury, the four Olympian Suites are definitely the way to go. Each one-bedroom suite has its own private pool and outdoor Jacuzzi as well as fantastic views of the sea and surrounding vineyards.

The Presidential Villa is the resort's Penthouse Suite, with three bedrooms, three full baths and a large outdoor terrace with private pool. But no matter your choice of suite, Vedema's consummate service and attention to the little details will make your stay one that you won't soon forget.

The Press Say

"With its pastel "houses", its exotic arches, its rough stone walls, walkways and courtyards, Vedema feels like some fantasy fortress that Bertolucci might use as a film location." Travel & Leisure

Vedema Resort caters to families and older visitors to Santorini who would have problems with the vertiginous steps of the boutique hotels that cling to the island's volcanic caldera.

Located in the interior of the island, Vedema feels like a village within a village. The many buildings of this former 15th-century winery are screened off from the sleepy town of Megalohori by ancient walls, guaranteeing complete privacy for the many celebrity guests who frequent the hotel.

Vedema has views of vineyards and the sea beyond which are not a patch on the spectacular vistas of Santorini's extinct volcanic crater from Oia and Firostefani. But its child-friendly villas are far more spacious than the traditional cave rooms of the traditional hotels in these villages. Besides, there are regular free shuttle buses to the caldera so guests won't miss out on those legendary, spectacular sunsets.

Vedema has two restaurants. Vinsanto offers a menu of creative, gourmet Mediterranean cuisine in a 400-year-old wine cellar or out on an expansive terrace beneath the stars. Pergola serves buffet breakfasts and simple, Greek dishes under a shady pergola beside the hotel's large pool. Wine-tasting and romantic dinners a deux can be arranged in the Canava Wine Bar and the Jacuzzi bar serves drinks and light snacks to parents watching their toddlers take a paddle.

The fleet of mountain bikes are free of charge for guests, as are the fully-equipped fitness centre and nearby tennis court. Its private sailing boat offers tours of the remnants of Santorini's extinct volcano, and a speed boat is available for visits to nearby islands. Vedema's shuttle bus regularly ferries guests to its private beach decked out with sun loungers, parasols and a beach bar. Parents need never miss out on this plethora of activities, as the luxury hotel has a full baby-sitting service.

Vedema's ethereal, cavernous spa offers the best massages on the island, and is also equipped with a hammam and sauna.

Instead of the usual, white, minimal interiors favoured by most hotels in Santorini, most of the 45 villas at Vedema are decorated in vibrant pastel shades of turquoise, canary yellow, soft pink and apple green. All have marble bathrooms and the usual mod cons you would expect from a luxury hotel.

The 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom villas are ideal for families. The 10 pool suites and the decadent Presidential Villa have been specially designed for guests who prize privacy over practicality.
