Space, luxury, privacy: Carpe Diem, set on the slopes below the historic village of Pyrgos, is hard to top for these most covetable of qualities on Greece's favourite resort island. 90-square-meter suites, with white-painted walls and floors and sleek, oversized, simply upholstered furnishings feel like decadent second homes - both indulgently vast and intimate.

The hotel's epicenter is its seemingly endless infinity pool, with views across rocky mountains down to the Aegean. Guests can indulge in a sauna or a steam in the Turkish baths (book it for private use, if you like). The Pool Bar offers a light menu of apertivo-style dishes as well as world-class wines and champagnes; a full Continental breakfast is delivered to your room each morning. The concierge is adept at matching the right historical tours and guides (or, the right nightlife itineraries) with guests, for memorable days and nights.

Even Junior Suites are the size of one-bedroom flats, with low-slung built in furniture, smooth cool white floors, and views of the sea. Pool suites have 90 meters of indoor space, and another 60 meters of pool and wrap terrace. Beds are draped in cool white and dove-grey linens; baths are of tile and stone, and enormous; white painted furniture and massive white votive candles keep spaces feeling light, airy, and otherworldly.
