Lux 11 5 Stars

“Slick urban styling on the ultra-cool Rosa Luxembourg Strasse make for an unapologetically fashionable boutique hotel.”

Hotel Overview

Review of Lux 11, by Isabel Clift

In Berlin’s central Mitte, Lux 11 stands out as a sleek, grown-up choice in a city often better-recognised for its rougher edges. Minimal in design, with quirky touches (staff wear branded Adidas tracksuits, there’s purple lighting and starburst chandeliers in the entrance), Lux 11 avoids the self-conscious edginess adopted by other hotels of its type in favour of a cool, classic approach.

More impressive still, the hotel manages to fit a fashion store, restaurant and beauty salon under its roof while keeping the feel of a chic enclave. Must be that sprinkle of design magic working.

Luchs restaurant is an effortless affair, with floor-to-ceiling windows and quick, friendly service making it a solid choice for dining in style. On either side, the mostly-white spaces of Ulf Haines fashion store and Beate Kahlcke Aveda spa also slip in well with the Lux 11

Luchs restaurant is an effortless affair, with floor-to-ceiling windows and quick, friendly service making it a solid choice for dining in style. On either side, the mostly-white spaces of Ulf Haines fashion store and Beate Kahlcke Aveda spa also slip in well with the Lux 11 aesthetic: fantasy afternoons spent gliding from beauty treatment to light lunch to shopping Ann Demeulemeester or Balmain bits seem to be played out here with the minimum of fuss.

Despite all this fantastically elegant stuff, the real focus at Lux 11 is the apartments. I can't think of a design hotel that makes itself accessible to so many: whether you're here on business, a romantic break or with family, your spacious quarters (yes, they feel really feel like quarters, rather than just a room or even suite) are super-accommodating.

Most are extravagantly large, with two bedrooms, a kitchen and lounge, plus lovely high windows and ceilings. Fresh yet sophisticated décor presides, with flat-screen TVs, DVD players, Korres toiletries and lofty wardrobe space adding to the high-spec finish. If you can, get one with a street-facing balcony: the views take in Berlin’s awesomely retro-looking TV Tower. I also loved my long, corridor-shaped shower with floor lights, which sat just a glass-and-stone partition away from the bed.

Clever space-creating design in Value rooms means this squeaky-clean look’s carried forward from the Penthouses down, and all rooms have a real boon in the form of full-service kitchenettes. I usually get excited at the presence of my own kettle, so the bonus of a fridge, dishwasher, sink, toaster, caffetiere and full sets of cutlery and crockery, all unobtrusively stored, scored major points: those romantic weekenders, business folk and families mentioned before could all put these to good use.

It’s minimalist mastery at its finest, really: at Lux 11, you receive far more than at a standard hotel, and all in a living space that aims to look like less.

The Press Say

"Created from 4 former apartment buildings, this 72-room property is a cut above the city's other recent high-design openings in large part because of its fabulous location bang in the heart of Mitte—currently Berlin's hippest neighborhood." Conde Nast Traveller 06

As Lux 11 is located in the heart of Berlin's fashionable Mitte district, it's a perfect pied-a-terre for shopping and clubbing as well as site-seeing. Fully equipped for long-stay guests as well as fleeting visitors, Lux 11 is the favourite boutique hotel in town with film producers, pop stars and sex kittens (several Playboy centrefolds were shot in its suites). Housed in a former banana warehouse and army officers' residence, the building has bags of historical charm, but interiors are resolutely contemporary.

The sleek, white reception desk of Lux 11 is flanked on one side by a full Aveda spa and on the other by trendy, designer restaurant Shiro I Shiro where breakfast is served to guests. Next door, Ulf Haines fashion boutique sells frocks, shirts and accessories by Europe's most cutting-edge designers hand-picked from the latest season's catwalk collections.

As the hotel is aimed at the savvy, independent traveller, don't expect the full-frills service of a five-star hotel. Lux 11's front desk shuts at 10:00 pm and 5:00 pm on the weekends.

All 72 rooms and suites at Lux 11 have the hallmarks of a classic design hotel. Minimal white interiors, smooth polished concrete floors and clever layouts give even the smallest Value Rooms a feeling of space. Fur bed throws give them a decadent twist whilst large tubes of hot-pink Lux 11-branded toiletries in the slick, slate bathrooms add a welcome dash of colour.

As all rooms at Lux 11 have elegant kitchenettes equipped with a microwave, kettle, toaster and dishwasher it's easy to see why fans of this trendy boutique hotel tend to stay a while.

The Rosa Luxembourg Strasse area is central to the idea of Berlin ubercool. From the footpath, guests could almost miss the front door of Lux 11. It is sandwiched between the AVEDA salon and a Pan Asian restaurant from the very successful Coochi brothers. Think of the international celebrity jetset lifestyle when you pack your Valextra bags, darlings, because you'll be rubbing shoulders with them in the private bar at the back of the restaurant.

Across the road is the Warner Studio where Fritz Lang made his seminal film Metropolis. Today, Lux 11 utilises that connection by accommodating visiting production crews in the 30 studios booked for the next two years. And who knows which film star might be staying in the penthouse upstairs? It is the only hotel in Berlin to have a deal with Black AMEX, where this card will open doors at the coolest clubs and get you tables at the busiest restaurants. To stay here is to purchase a slice of celebrity lifestyle, even if it is just for the weekend.

Upstairs the poured concrete, glass and steel continue in the 72 rooms. However, they have softened the whole 'living in a shop feeling' with big furry textiles on the beds, deep plush sofas and large fluffy robes and towels. It's very sexy and is finished with must-have technologies: wi-fi, plasma tv and DVD, mini stereos and a kitchenette kitted out to make cocktails (or is that a fruit smoothie?) along with your toast. You have the makings of a sexy weekend in Berlin or a month-long stay in the capital.
