Hotel Art Nouveau 3 Stars

"A quiet, good-value option, this boutique hotel has just 22 rooms, carved from a once-grand Art Nouveau apartment block."

Hotel Overview

Review of Hotel Art Nouveau, by Jeroen Bergmans

Hotel Art Nouveau is a hidden gem of a boutique hotel tucked away on a quiet street off Kufurstendamm, Berlin's premier shopping street. When owners Christine and Gerd Schlenzka discovered it a decade ago it was a run-down pension, but they saw huge potential in its creaking charm and original Art Nouveau features dating back to 1908.

They restored the stuccoed ceilings and hardwood floors of the large rooms and added carefully-chosen designer furniture and abstract artwork to give them a contemporary twist. Word soon got out about this quiet and unassuming Berlin bolthole and it fast became a favourite with visiting artists, politicians, writers and actors.

The 19 rooms and 3 junior suites are furnished with a quirky mix of modern furniture, Philippe Starck TVs, sumptuous beds and original antiques. Black and white prints by art photographe

Black and white prints by art photographer Sabine Kacunko add an element of Berlin edginess and Authentics toiletries a dash of luxury. The monochrome Japanese Room is the most elegant and a stark contrast to the acid yellows and greens of the other rooms.

The Hotel Art Nouveau has no restaurant, but does offer room service and a buffet breakfast in the salon which also has a kitchenette and an honesty bar. The wood-panelled library with its flat-screen TV and computer with free internet acces is a new addition and is often used as a meeting room.

The Press Say

"Romantic and far friendlier than the average hotel, the Art Nouveau is a pension near Savignyplatz, deep in the heart of the former West Berlin — but, with its ancient (but safe) birdcage lift, it feels more Parisian than Berliner. The lift takes you to the fourth floor, where you’ll find the 22 rooms." Independent 06
