Murano Resort Paris 4 Stars

"The ultra-stylish design hotel in the Marais sets the standard, from the glamorous bar to suites with private rooftop pools."

Hotel Overview

Review of Murano Resort Paris, by Nadia Latif

The Murano Resort Paris caused quite a stir on the city's hotel scene when it first opened in 2004. Tres cutting-edge, it heralded a move away from the formalities of the palaces and showed that the French capital could embrace modernity just as well as its edgier neighbours.

Now, the Murano is no longer the new kid on the block. There are design hotels aplenty in Paris, but this one still manages to be a forerunner in the pack. It has no shortage of bling and retro cool - a true crash pad for the city's party people. Its location just around the corner from super-trendy Le Marais is a huge plus point too; some of the best bars and restaurants in Paris are to be found within walking distance of the Murano.

A long, floating fireplace lined by a white upholstered sofa greets guests as they enter. Opposite, a pink modular love-seat, silver lamé armchairs and pixellated images projected towards the bar below set the tone - very bubblegum Barbarella. The addition of Vincent Bride's silver pebble sculptures, crafted from Murano glass, leaves no doubt that this is not the place for the staid and serious.

The restaurant carries a similar white-on-white theme to the rest of the communal areas. Open from midday until midnight, its tubular stalactite installation soon makes one realize that this isn't a place to merely eat; this is a place to see and be seen. The main bar is open 'til late, with a nightly DJ and the biggest vodka bar in France (170 different brands and a fab mixologist). There's also a slick champagne bar, which changes its décor and house champagne monthly.

The 52 rooms don't have swipe cards. Instead, each room uses a fingerprint reader, which feels very James Bond. They are all white inside (scary colour scheme for those with little ones, and to be honest although the hotel welcomes children, it is much more adult-orientated). Bang and Olufsen technology and the Murano's own branded CD's are a slick touch. Slightly stranger are the porcelain metallic tanks that feature in each. The bathrooms are sexy black slate.

The suites here are brilliant. The top two have private heated pools, and the Honeymoon comes complete with a very naughty circular bed. All of them have kitchenettes and Nespresso machines. Better still, all of them have use of the hotel's sports car, a pillow menu and Yes for Love bedroom toys in the minibar.

Who stays here?

The clientele at the Murano do tend to be young and hip; the hotel accepts children but it's not a family-friendly kind of place. It's well-known as a celebrity hang-out in Paris - LA screen queens regularly totter through the lobby and during Fashion Week it's awash with supermodels (Helena Christensen among them.)

Come for...

  • Murano glass
  • Private pools in deluxe suites

Not Suitable for...

  • Bluff old traditionalists
  • The self-conscious, during Fashion Week

Children

The hotel welcomes children, and the concierge can arrange a babysitting service for families. Extra beds are available for the room and some of the rooms interconnect for families.

Eating in

The Mediterranean restaurant (and associated glamorous bar) are headed up by Julien Chicoisne from the Fermes de Marie in Megève and Pierre Auge from London's Sketch.
