Hotel Sezz 4 Stars

"Christophe Pillet's dramatic and ultra-chic design hotel is a hideaway in the busy capital across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower."

Hotel Overview

Review of Hotel Sezz, by Nadia Latif

A glass of champagne on arrival is not what you'd expect from a hotel that was once a Best Western. Hotel Sezz, though, has completely shed its former skin and emerged as a sleek and chic design hotel in Paris's 16th arrondissement - a place where a glass of champers on arrival seems perfectly fitting. Just don't expect it to be served from the reception desk; this place is so cutting-edge, it's done away with it.

The classical façade hides an interior that's Christophe Pillet cool to the nth degree. The décor is seriously sexy, in an haute-design kind of way. No lacy flounces and delicate antiques here; red and black have a free reign, with exposed stone walls and futuristic furniture. It's more smooth bachelor pad that romantic hideaway.

This design hotel boasts the first champagne bar of its kind in Paris, sponsored by Veuve Cliquot, which doubles up as a breakfast room. There's private parking outside (for four cars) which is a huge bonus in this city. There's also a sumptuous spa, replete with hammam and Jacuzzi.

The 26 rooms are definitely worth a mention for the bathrooms alone. They are gorgeously appointed, with sloping Corian sinks and Kiel's bath products in each. The Classic Suite is a particular favourite; a glass, cubed structure with a huge shower and bath; some rooms have balconies, so be sure to ask on reservation.

To really splash out, book the Eiffel Suite. A generous 70m², it boasts sweeping views of the famous Tower, a separate living room (complete with a Christophe Pillet sofa), a bathtub big enough for two and state-of-the-art technology (including an iPod dock and PlayStation 3).

A wonderfully quiet design hotel near the Seine, the Hotel Sezz is a converted townhouse in Paris.

At the design hotel the reception staff is tucked away in a small office off the little public space, and are unfailingly attentive and helpful - in fact the Hotel Sezz offers them as 'personal assistants' to guests, along with free Wi-Fi and phone roaming. As such this design hotel is a favourite with style-conscious working execs in the week, and often has great rates at weekends. Downstairs there's a small hammam and Jacuzzi and the metro is close giving guests easy access to Paris.

The rooms at the design hotel come in various flavours - mostly based on how the bathrooms are configured. Some in the room behind glass; some freestanding, etc. Cool contemporary materials are used at the design hotel. Most commonly grey slate (and not any old slate, but pierre de caiscais from Portugal), cream composite bathrooms, tonal lighting and graphic and photo art on the walls.

The Hotel Sezz is an attractive Parisian design hotel in every sense; with stern grey stone walls extend throughout.

Bedrooms are good, though not overly large. Some rooms have king-sized baths, big enough for two. Two rooms have views of the Eiffel Tower - for a fee.

The hotel is not one to lounge in: no restaurant, no real bar, small modern 'lounge' and very un-cosy breakfast room. However, the design ethic, the good rooms, the parking (so important in Paris), the little Jacuzzi and sauna and the friendly staff make up for deficiencies.
