Hotel Overview

Review of Hotel de Sers, by Nadia Latif

The Hotel de Sers in Paris is something of a balancing act. It's housed in a beautiful 19th-century building near the Champs Elysees, which perfectly captures the elegance and bonhomie of the city. But it's anything but stuffy; bright floral prints and funky design features set it apart from the more old-school establishments.

The portrait gallery is a great example of this fusing of old and new. Surely nothing quite sums up pre-War nobility quite like a lengthy corridor of ancestral prints? And the Hotel de Sers certainly delivers on this front. What is also does, however, is furnish it with retro 'Teddy Bear' chairs by Hans Wegner, upholstered in soft grey, with side tables decked with white orchids and fashionable magazines.

The restaurant epitomizes Parisian chic. It looks out onto a sunny green courtyard, and is a favourite spot with the locals

The restaurant epitomizes Parisian chic. It looks out onto a sunny green courtyard, and is a favourite spot with the locals. As such, it is always bustling and lively - serving up traditional French cuisine in a laid-back setting. There's also a petite bar, with a loud colour palette - pinks and purples reign. There's a small but perfectly formed cocktail list - don't leave without sampling the La Rose Sauvage, which blends rose syrup, champagne and pink grapefruit juice - it's flirty, girly and delicious.

The 52 bedrooms are smart and elegant, with a smattering of antique paintings and photographs in each. They are all of a decent size, for Paris, with lovely Italian marble bathrooms. All Deluxe Rooms have a claw bath - a great feature.

The Hotel de Sers is the culmination of an 18-month, EUR 20m renovation of an earlier 18th-century mansion that was once home to the Marquis de Sers. The success of this hotel rests on a seamless integration of design and excellent lighting effects whilst retaining traditional features such as the rather grand central staircases, the tall ceilings, the cornicing (in places), and the introduction of 19th-century oil portraits of turn-of-the-century figures.

There is full restaurant service, which takes full advantage of its 'golden triangle' location just off the Champs Elysees. A small spa, and a large light breakfast area open out onto a terrace. It is definitely a Paris favourite.

Upstairs, the paint colours are duck-egg blue, mulberry and so on and have been chosen carefully to best reflect the lighting arrangements. There are other bright splashes of colour from the odd funky flower print chair to lift the neutral toning and cream/white walls. The 52 light-filled rooms are grouped around a central light well of changing colours.

All rooms have Bang and Olufsen flat screen TVs, classical music on the stereo to welcome guests and separate showers. Many of the bedrooms in this luxury hotel have open bathrooms and freestanding baths. A suite on the top floor has a large terrace with views of the Eiffel Tower. It is the detailing that makes the difference in the luxury Hotel de Sers - lamps, light switches and fresh flowers.
