Hospes Hotel Lancaster 4 Stars

"This lush and luxe townhouse conversion is filled with marble, artefacts and Louis XVI furniture, with a calming Japanese garden.”

Hotel Overview

Review of Hospes Hotel Lancaster, by Chloe Loyd

With its grand address and wonderfully refined interiors, the Hospes Hotel Lancaster is one of the most prestigious luxury hotels in Paris. Style-wise, 18th-century French décor and Louis XV and XVI furniture have recently been tempered by an Oriental style: an Alice in Wonderland-style sitting room complete with chess tables and stylised chairs looks out onto a Japanese style garden.

Unsurprisingly, the impeccable attention to detail and elegantly comfortable surroundings have attracted a glittering celebrity following to the Hospes Hotel Lancaster, with past guests including Noel Coward, Ewan McGregor, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich.

Next door to the hotel, the excellent Senzone cocktail bar and the Michelin-starred restaurant, La Table du Lancaster, open up the famously private hotel to a new clientele. In terms of other facilities, a

In terms of other facilities, a small rooftop gym is also available, as are couple of large meeting rooms and a private dining room.

The Hospes Hotel Lancaster has classic rooms that provide all the most up-to-date amenities that guests could expect: all rooms offer two telephone lines, voice mail service, a safe, a TV/DVD player, as well as cable and satellite TV. All are luxuriously furnished in a traditional style, with plush carpets and heavy themed fabrics complementing period furniture. The legendary suites are a major attraction; one is named after Marlene Dietrich, who lived in it for three years, decorated to her taste in lilac with a huge sitting room sporting two marble fireplaces.

The marble bathrooms are mirrored and spacious. Fresh flowers and the Hotel Lancaster's own line of scent, "Contemporel", are small examples of the exacting attention to detail. Most of the bathrooms combine grey or beige marble and African iroko wood, while the luxury bathroom fixtures, the heated towel bars and all the accessories display a retro design. Towels, bathrobes and slippers are also designed uniquely for the hotel.

Six years after extensive restoration, the Hospes Hotel Lancaster is still the chicest address in Paris. Six years after extensive restoration, the Hospes Hotel Lancaster is still the chicest address in Paris. This 1889 townhouse stands on Rue de Berri, off the north side of the Champs-Elysées, a stone's throw from the exclusive shops of the Rue du Faubourg. This was the building that inspired legendary hotelier Emile Wolf to open a hotel in the ancienne regime style house in 1930.

When the Hospes Hotel Lancaster first threw open its doors, it became a by-word for discreet elegance. Wolf had personally overseen every detail of the luxury hotel's decor, filling it with art and antiques. Marlene Dietrich made it her home while in Paris and artist Boris Pastoukhoff gave the hotel over 80 works of art as payment for his many stays in the 1930s (they are still displayed in the Lancaster). Noel Coward, Greta Garbo, Grace Kelly and Sir Alec Guinness are some of the other names associated with the luxury hotel.

All the rooms are individually fabulous but the suites are the ones to go for. The Marlene Dietrich suite is a symphony of lilac, the actress's favourite colour, while the huge cinnamon and gold Emile Wolf suite next door features a grand piano. The gorgeous Suite 75 is bathed in light and overlooks the tranquil Zen garden in the inner courtyard.

The Hospes Hotel Lancaster is one of the most charming and elegantly restored luxury hotels in Paris. It is a jewel, with a small chinese garden for outdoor dining, and exquisite meeting room and a small drawing room. Its position is just metres from the Champs Elysees. If you are someone who does not need extensive facilities or spacious public rooms in their luxury hotel - this hideaway from the Champs Elysees hubbub has much to recommend it.

Facing either Rue de Berri or the interior courtyard garden, the 49 rooms and 11 suites of the Hospes Hotel Lancaster cover 8 floors of the building. Fabrics in the luxury hotel's rooms are well chosen and in muted colours - greys, pale yellows, creams and dusty pinks - with a smattering of chinoiserie, fine prints and pictures, antique faded mirrors, and good antique or repro furniture. Some have fireplaces, many have high ceilings. Intimate or very spacious, they all tie to a certain art of living à la Française, through their rare antique furniture, luxurious items, paintings, sofas, desks, and porcelain.
