Artus Hotel 3 Stars

"Artus Hotel is a petite wonder: zany, design-conscious, cheap chic rooms in the heart of Saint Germain"

Hotel Overview

Review of Artus Hotel, by The Hotel Inspector

Trendy hotels, however small, don't always make charming ones; character is often obliterated by the unrelenting quest to be hip, and what seems at first stylishly minimalist turns out to be sterile and dull. The Hotel Artus, however, which has recently changed its name from Buci Latin so as not to confuse it with the Buci down the road, has enough characterful touches to give it a heart.

One of these is the popular basement coffee shop from where delicious smells waft up to the reception room, enlivened by a collection of American painted metal toys. Here there are sensually curving walls, across one of which are the framed photographs of the hotel's 27 bedroom doors, each painted by one of three artists. There's more crazy painting up the stairwell, the work of a New York graffitti artist: be sure to look.

Rooms at the Hotel Artus are comfortable and employ good quality bedlinen simply draped over the beds, a predominantly terracotta and maroon colour scheme, de rigueur curvy fitted furniture, and bathrooms with prettily tiled floors. Neither bedrooms nor bathrooms are large, but if you crave space, consider the suite or duplex, with splendid Victorian cast-iron bath.

Review of Hotel Artus, by Joanna Monkhouse

The Artus Hotel has a great location on the bustling Rue de Buci, in a lively quartier on the left bank of Paris. Modern artwork features not only in the lobby and on the walls of the rooms but also on their doors - customised by seven local artists (if you can't find your room, match the door with the key) who also left their mark on the graffitied stairwell which must be the brightest in Paris.

Zebra print chairs and an honesty bar are the first things to greet you on entering the Artus Hotel and this quirky hotel continues to surprise and delight at every turn. Breakfast, which is included in the room rate, is served in the bright basement, where vibrant coloured leather chairs cluster round tables, a race car and an old fashioned trunk displaying old toys and the daily newspapers.

An antique red leather barber's chair serves the complimentary computer terminal. The Artus Hotel is hip and funky but without the attitude that all too often accompanies hotels that are victims of their own success. Here, the staff have nothing but smiles and are only too pleased to help.

The dark beams and burnt orange walls of the rooms contrast with the pale wood furniture - tall headboards engraved with twigs, uplighters and contured desks and bamboo effect cupboards. Bathrooms are simple and white with large mirrors. One suite has a small terrace and big, round Jacuzzi and the other is a duplex with a freestanding bath on the upper level.

The well located Hotel Artus (well located for the action, that is) is a minimalist decorated designer hotel of 27 rooms.
