Hotel Overview

Review of Le Burgundy Paris, by Catherine Cooper

Le Burgundy Paris is an ultra-luxury hotel in the heart of the high-class shopping district of Paris (Chanel is literally around the corner) with incredible attention to detail.

The 59-room hotel opened in July 2010 following a two and a half year renovation and is now offers an exquisite yet friendly and relaxed place to stay right in the centre of the French capital.

Original art is key to the hotel - the central atrium is dominated by a Guy de Rougement sculpture whose theme continues through the hotel in brass curves inlaid into the marble floors and brightly-coloured pictures by the same artist behind reception and in some of the bedrooms.

Literature-lovers might like to know that Charles Baudelaire is rumoured to have once lived on the site of the hotel. Today its light and airy Michelin-starred restaurant is named after the author and the ceiling of the gentleman’s club-style bar is covered with a mural entitled “Fleurs du Mal” by Marco del Re inspired by Baudelaire’s poems. Breakfast and afternoon tea is served in The Winter Garden – a glass-roofed courtyard in the centre of the hotel.

Downstairs the Spa by Carita boasts an 18m by 4m pool – the largest in Paris for a hotel of this size – as well as generously-sized sauna and hammam and single and dual treatment rooms.

Le Burgundy has 59 rooms including eight junior suites, eight suites and three rooms suitable for disabled people. The individually-decorated rooms strike a perfect balance between traditional and modern with enormous beds, panelled walls, ceiling cornicing, gorgeous lead-crystal lamps, two sets of heavy swagged curtains, luxuriously upholstered chairs, large, modern desks and soft grey carpets. Staying at Le Burgundy feels like being the guest of an exceptionally well-heeled interior-designer friend.

All mod cons are provided – rooms have large Loewe televisions with a pleasingly heavy remote control, free Wifi, a double iPod dock and adaptor plugs in case you have forgotten yours. You can also request a laptop (English or French), mobile phone charger, Wii or Wii Fit or a DVD player. You can even borrow an iPod to take jogging and the reception staff will be happy to suggest a route.

Bathrooms are spacious and crammed with Anne Semonin toiletries and plenty of fluffy white towels – many rooms also have a separate bath and shower and some suites have Jacuzzis.

Children are incredibly well-catered for – interconnecting rooms are available, all the baby equipment you need can be borrowed and babysitters who speak your language can be arranged. Best of all, a teddy with a Le Burgundy scarf is waiting on every child’s bed and they are even provided with mini hotel slippers.

Many guests stay at the hotel for several weeks at a time and some of the suites are designed with this in mind – l’appartement is on two floors with a terrace and feels like a Parisian apartment while La Suite Royale is a party suite with its own bar. It is also possible to book the entire top floor as The Presidential Suite, accessible by private elevator and offering five living rooms, three bedrooms, a bar and terrace.
