Alpaga is a stylish retreat for those-in-the-know in Megeve. It occupies a picture-perfect spot in the French Alps, a five-minute walk from the actual village that's perched over a thousand meters above sea level. South-facing, the hotel and chalets overlook the Arly Valley, and further to Mont Blanc. It's been welcoming guests here since 1910, but only recently has undergone its current, contemporary transformation.

The facilities

Plentiful, which makes it particularly great for families. The restaurant serves "bistronomic" cuisine, traditional French fare with a lighter, contemporary touch. The bar is particularly nice, and opens out onto a summer terrace in warmer climes. There's an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and fitness centre on site too.

A range of outdoor activities are available for all seasons, and most can be tailored for children. Choose from dog or horse sledding, skiing, wall climbing, tennis, pony trekking, and an outdoor ice rink during colder months.

The rooms

The main house of Alpaga has 22 contemporary-styled bedrooms, with views over the surrounding mountains. There's also independent apartments - perfect for families - and a cluster of chalets for larger groups, which can accommodate up to 13 people. All accommodation boast king-size beds, large bay windows, flat-screen television, complimentary wifi, and in some cases, private balconies.
