Review of Hotel Crillon le Brave, by The Hotel Inspector

The charms of the luxurious Crillon le Brave Provence, occupying seven stone houses in the hilltop village of Crillon le Brave, continue to inspire readers to fill our postbag with rave reviews. Delightful, enthuses one satisfied visitor. Very good restaurant, excellent service, a lovely setting and charming patron. Others praise chef Philippe; and yet another applauds the wide-ranging wine list, which offered excellent value. A summer bistro, serving simpler market food, is open between 12 and 4pm daily.

The rooms

The 16th-century stone-built houses are solid and calm. While most of the credit for the resounding success of the hotel must go to its three proprietors and their low-key style, a considerable share goes also to the perched location, which gives uninterrupted views of a heavenly landscape of olive groves and vineyards. Canadian lawyer Peter Chittick and collaborators Craig Miller and Patrick Galliard manage to provide luxury without erasing character. Despite the designer fabrics, fitted carpets and smart bathrooms, the exposed beams and rustic furniture dominate. The restaurant is open nightly: you can eat beneath stone vaults, or out on the pretty terrace with views of Mont Ventoux. A joy.
