Chateau de Mazan 4 Stars
"Formerly the residence of the legendary Marquis de Sade, this 18th-century chateau is nestled in Mazan just 25 km from Avignon."
Hotel Overview
Chateau de Mazan is situated in the charming village of Mazan, in Provence. This elegant 18th-century building is the perfect setting for a boutique hotel hideaway, withimpeccable staff and an air of historic French grandeur. The village is nestled at the foot of Mont Ventoux, which gives great views of the mountain and Provencal countryside.
Built around 1720, Chateau de Mazan was the birthplace of both the father and the uncle of the legendary Marquis de Sade. The Marquis was a frequent visitor to the Chateau de Mazan, and it was from here that he organised the first ever French theatrical festival in 1772.
The facilities
The surroundings enjoyed by the Marquis de Sade remain today, as guests are able to walk on restored 19th-century tiled floors, examine the old Provencal casement windows and admire the Marquis' original library. Much of this boutique hotel's furniture is antique, and its gardens have been redesigned to mirror their 18th-century splendour.
The gardens are one of the best parts of the Chateau de Mazan. Shady olive tree, banks of fragrant flowers and the refreshing outdoor pool all combine to make them a firm favourite of the guests who stay here.
Château de Mazan's restaurant, L'Ingénue, is expertly managed by head chef Iris Enrich and is well regarded by the locals. It has ethical credentials too, with its menu using mostly local, seasonal produce. On warm summer evenings, guests dine on the terrace overlooking the gardens; in winter, the restaurant moves to the boutique hotel's vast hall - which was the setting for plays and events staged by the Divin Marquis. This is unique surroundings for one-of-a-kind food.
The rooms
The luxury hotel boasts 30 rooms, elegantly decorated in warm neutrals and with beds covered by fresh floral cotton duvets. If you treat yourself to a suite, you can enjoy a steam-shower room and have the option of a flower-filled terrace or private garden. Some suites also offer splendid views over the tiled rooftops of the village.
