Review of Amathus Beach Hotel, by Solange Hando

The Amathus Beach Hotel owes its name to the ancient kingdom whose remains lie a few minutes away but in this modern resort, boasting 239 rooms, only the odd pottery urn or mythological scene pays tribute to the past. The hotel was recently refurbished by Italian designers and is strung with Murano glass lights in the corridors and paintings by contemporary Italian artists, some done in situ.

Six miles east of the town centre, the Amathus in Limassol enjoys a quiet seafront location with small beach and marina. The spacious lobby greets you with stylish flower arrangements and sea views across 4000 square metres of lawns. Amenities include three pools, two floodlit tennis courts, a fitness and wellness centre with Pevonia Botanica and Carita treatments. The shopping arcade sells an exclusive collection of beachwear (Lymbas creations) by local artists.

The visitors' book is strictly for celebrities, Scorpions topping the list, but the hotel is busy year round, with corporate clients and seniors in winter, families in summer. Service is efficient and family friendly with children's menus and TV channel, organised activities in school holidays, board and electronic games, play areas and baby sitting service.

Of the 239 guestrooms, inland view rooms look out on to the small hotel car park and flats across the road, but don't suffer from noise, and can accommodate two adults and two children. Sea view rooms are smaller but have a balcony with teak furnishings and convertible settee for one child. All have floor to ceiling windows, marble bathrooms, wardrobes with fully removable hangers and internet access (chargeable).

Colours are soothing blue-green and cappuccino and the atmosphere is one of relaxed comfort. The 36 junior suites have sea views, tea and coffee making facilities, plasma TV, Bvlgari toiletries and twin basins, large balconies and in deluxe suites at garden level, patio with private heated pool and Jaccuzi. Top of the range are executive and presidential suites.
