The facilities

Stately home elegance extends from the smallest nook and cranny to the biggest welcome in the hotel lobby with the daily serving of Afternoon Tea. Every inch of the hotel's decor and demeanour says 'we'll take the weight' and quite frankly it would be rude not to let them. Enjoy complete pampering and escapism in the Willow Stream Spa where a calming waterfall welcomes guests and the Hungarian mineral bath sets the tone for what you can expect.

The hotel's health club is open 24 hours and, with its fitness center, heated indoor atrium pool and whirlpool making the chance to switch off for five minutes a virtual impossibility to avoid. For a typical Canadian adventure, book a flying tour or whale-watching excursion from the docks, just outside the hotel.

The rooms

Antique furniture, floral bedspreads and a colour palette of pale pinks, greens and yellows feature in all 477 of the Fairmont Empress's rooms. Inviting soft beds with down-filled duvets and comfortable armchairs mix perfectly with plush bathrooms and snug signature bathrobes. Views are either of the cityscape, out across the harbour or onto the pretty courtyard; so either way there's a photo opportunity that's sure not to disappoint.

Eating in

Fine dining, a colonial setting and a century old tradition are all on the menu here. The Empress Room, decked out with ornate tapestries, landscape art and privy to live harp music makes a signature dish like the Wild British Columbia sockeye salmon taste all the more spectacular. The 500 wines on the list ensure you will also find the perfect accompaniment. The leather chairs and tiger skins of the Bengal Lounge add a helping of personality to the menu and live jazz at the weekends injects a bit of fun. Afternoon Tea in the Lobby serves pastries and clotted cream, washed down with a traditional pot of Earl.
