The rather unpronouncable UXUA Casa Hotel in Bahia is at least straightforward in its direction: an intimate, eco-positive retreat that doesn't compromise on style. Its credentials are sound - around 60% of UXUA's seaside property is reserved for the exclusive use of endangered sea turtles, the beach lounge roof is fashioned from abandoned fishing boats and the exclusive river dock accommodates the nearby Atlantic mangroves.

The facilities

The restaurant here is something special, dishing up inventive Brazilian cuisine and sumptuous cocktails. There's also the lovely Praia Bar, an exclusive-feeling space of sleek-lined sofas and bamboo pergolas. And of course, there's the ubiquitous 'world music' playing softly in the background. UXUA also has a spa on-site.

The rooms

Just nine casas make up this eco-retreat. They are refined and give a real sense of luxury, even in the jungle setting. All have private gardens and plunge pools, a Jacuzzi, hammocks and small terrace. Inside find king-size beds, iPod docking stations and local Bahian artwork, plus sybaritic indoor-outdoor bathrooms.
