"Authentic baroque experience in a good getaway city"

Hotel Overview

Review of Palais Hotel Erzherzog Johann, by Ken Scrudato

The Erzherzog Johann provided an absolutely sublime experience; perfect, should you be looking for something of an escape to another century. Its sublime location, in the heart of the action in old Graz, is enough to recommend it.

However, no other hotel in town offers as much authentic atmosphere. The Erzherzog Johann is essentially a gorgeous Baroque palace turned swish boutique hotel, with fiercely unique architectural details. The facilities

The Ernst Fuchs Bar, a sort of tribute to the eponymous Austrian painter, is famous for its skill with a cocktail. Indeed, bartender Manfred Goger is something of a legend in this town. The Wintergarden restaurant, located at the base of the atrium, is a deeply romantic dining option. The Erzherzog Johann is posh and urbane, but at once endearingly peculiar.

The rooms

The 60 rooms, assembled around the atrium, are shamelessly lavish (there's nothing worse than timid opulence) done up with extravagant chandeliers, trompe l'oreil walls and period furniture. The deluxe rooms are plenty spacious and absolutely stunning. Huge windows with rooftop views heighten the atmospheric charm.
