In a post-Hapsburg world, even the media elite can afford the occasional royal fantasy, if they resign to save up their pennies. And Berlin’s Schlosshotel im Grunewald is the luxury hotel to live truly like ein konig, if only for a weekend.
The facilities
An aristocratic palace dating to 1914, it was recently given an aesthetic makeover by his-royal-flamboyance Karl Lagerfeld, meaning the luxury hotel is now as chic and outré as it as gilded. Set in the Grunewald, or “green forest,” it’s a verdant alternative to staying in the heart of Berlin, and affords guests the ever-possible thrill of bumping into Herr Lagerfeld, who keeps his own suite here. Grand is hardly the word.
