As soon as you enter the Hotel Regency in Florence you feel confident that you’re going to be comfortable – cosseted even. And who isn’t partial to a bit of cosseting? The luxury hotel sits on a leafy square, just a few minutes’ walk from the heart of Florence and that masterpiece of Renaissance engineering, Brunelleschi’s glorious dome. The building, an elegant 19th-century villa, retains a number of original features including a Liberty-style glass ceiling in the restaurant, decorated with the signs of the zodiac. Some guest rooms are situated in an adjacent villa.
The facilities
Fragrant lilies and squashy sofas combine with glossy wooden furniture and antique pieces in the cosy lounges, where guests can relax with a fresh pot of tea or a drink from the hotel’s bar. On hot days the Hotel Regency’s lovely courtyard garden – a luxury in Florence where space is at a premium – provides a gloriously cool retreat.
The luxury hotel’s restaurant, Relais Le Jardin, serves sophisticated versions of Tuscan dishes in an elegant setting: guests can eat in the Veranda room looking out on the garden, or in the more intimate Zodiaco room. The menu might include Florentine steaks, homemade porcini pasta, and tempting desserts such as a parfait of cantucci with a Vin Santo sauce. As you might expect in a luxury hotel, there is also an extensive wine list. It includes Tuscan classics such as Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Brunello from Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano.

All 35 rooms and suites at this luxury hotel combine elegance with contemporary comforts. No two rooms are the same at the Regency, but all boast large flat screen televisions, Wi-Fi internet access, well stocked mini bars and comfortable beds with fine white cotton sheets. Bathrooms are a cut above those in most luxury hotels in Florence with sparkling tiles, gleaming chrome, large mirrors and great lighting. After your bath or shower you can wrap yourself up in one of the Regency’s fluffy white bathrobes and relax.
