Who stays here

Despite the grandeur (Queen Victoria stayed here - as did Prince Charles and Camilla), it has a relaxed house-party feel. Traditional but not snooty, with lots of A-listers down from London in Boden and Cath Kidston wellies.

  • Idyllic setting, charming Mr Darcy-style Regency house
  • Fishing in the River Tamar, walking and horse-riding on the moors
  • Fireplaces in all the downstairs rooms

Not suitable for

  • Dieters won't like Afternoon Tea - clotted cream, scones, steaming pots of tea, fresh strawberries...

Children

Children are welcome to stay at the hotel, and they can arrange a babysitting service for guests. There are also extra beds for the rooms. The suites interconnect, and they recommend this option for larger families.

Eating in

Delicious, traditional English food (Devon beef; sticky toffee pudding) is dished up in the ground-floor dining room; the lounge bar is cosy and comfy. Afternoon tea served in the library.

Press Quotes

“It is furnished in country house-goes-boutique chic style with panelling and wallpaper in the original Regency spirit, shutters and white blinds, and stylish pots of orchids. The 16-bedroom house is set in 108 acres by the River Tamar - with one of Britain's wildest national parks beyond.” Independent 07

"Olga Polizzi of Tresanton fame has turned her sure hand to a little country house in Devon on 108 acres of Dartmoor woodland."

Welcome to Hotel Endsleigh, situated on the edge of Dartmoor, one of the greatest, unspoilt natural areas left in England, perfect for walking, riding and fishing.

The first stone was laid at Endsleigh in 1812 by Georgina, Duchess of Bedford and her three eldest sons. The Bedford family owned a third of Devon and decided this was the prettiest place in the county to build their house. Endsleigh was designed by Sir Jeffrey Wyattville as a cottage orné.

The family used it as a shooting and fishing lodge; they opened it just once a year when they arrived with servants, children, silver and animals in tow. Georgina was a passionate gardener and lover of the outdoors and Humphrey Repton created an outstanding garden for her. Both the house and the garden are Grade I listed.

Endsleigh is now an intimate hotel set in unchanged countryside.

There are 108 acres of woodland and garden to explore, along with a stretch of the Tamar River. The hotel is a member of the Endsleigh Fishing Club and owns seven rods, so guests can fish along eight miles of the best salmon and sea trout river in England. The fishing club ghillie is there to help guests.
