Since its opening as a design hotel the Commune by the Great Wall Kempinski has become a must-visit place in Beijing, receiving over 200,000 visitors. It has become a showcase of contemporary Chinese and Asian architecture and has been widely covered by both Chinese and international media. This edgy design hotel is a monumental breakthrough in Asian architecture, and has become an icon of new China.

Managed by Kempinski since August 2005, it is considered as SOHO China's most creative project. Set amid the mountains near the Shuiguan section of the Great Wall, the 8 square kilometer development is a private collection of contemporary architecture designed by 12 Asian architects. This design hotel won an architectural prize at the Biennale di Venezia in 2002

The facilities

The Club House serves multiple purposes and houses a courtyard restaurant, a lounge, a large multi-function hall, a gallery, a cinema and a library attired in peacock feathers. Skiing, ski-doo (Nov-March), horse riding, polo, golf and hiking are some of the local activities available to guests. Private helicopter transfer is also available upon request. There's a private airport 15 minutes drive away.

The villas

Eleven houses, ranging in size from 4 to 6 bedrooms, are dispersed along the valley and all frame views of the sinuous landscape and the Great Wall, accessible by a path on the property. Each villa has a different and exclusive interior design and retains a dedicated butler available 24/7 if required. En-suite bedrooms are available and some villas have an individual sauna.
