Hotel la Coluccia, a bijou design hotel near the Costa Smerelda, consists of a smattering of smart villas on the protected Coluccia peninsula on Sardinia’s stunning north coast. The place feels like a real hideaway, with its intelligent design making the most out of every space. Lovely details stop the hip aesthetic being self-conscious or intimidating – rose petals dust the glass-covered reception counter – and the young staff is genuinely friendly, making you feel at home upon arrival. The elegant wide lobby contains the bar – a very glamorous set-up.
The design hotel is rightly popular with guests who, perhaps surprisingly, span the generations: an elderly couple we spoke to had spent the whole two weeks of their holiday at the hotel and sang its praises in no uncertain terms. With some of the island’s most stunning beaches nearby as well as the archipelago of Maddelena perfect for day-long sailing trip, La Coluccia makes a wonderful and discreet base away from the crowds of the Costa Smerelda.
The facilities
From the design hotel’s pool there is a walkway through a fragrant wood of pine trees down to the perfect little private beach with its rows of sun loungers and the famously turquoise, clear waters of the island, edged by the famous granite cliffs of the Gallura region. To see one of the many ways in which this hotel excels at romance, stroll down the wooden walkway to the beach at night.
Hotel la Coluccia’s gourmet restaurant has a wonderful terrace, and eating the delicious local dishes during a pink-tinged sunset with the scents of the Galluran macchia wafting over is another unbeatable romantic experience. An extensive wine list and attentive service make La Coluccia’s restaurant outstanding.
The rooms
The Hotel la Coluccia’s 45 bedrooms are not all large, but ingenious contemporary design manages to give a feeling of spaciousness. Some rooms overlook the swimming pool with the sea behind, and a view of Spargi island. All rooms have state-of-the-art satellite television, separate shower and hairdryer and most feature a balcony, though some are just big enough to hang bikinis on to dry!
