"Napa Valley's hidden luxury lodge has its own lake, a relaxed Californian vibe and a gorgeous nature-fabulous outdoor spa."

Can Serola is a renovated 18th-century farmhouse located in Sales de Llierca, Spain, on the edge of the La Garrotxa Natural Park. This boutique hotel is surrounded by lush gardens and rolling greenery, providing access to several outdoor activities. The Can Serola also strives to create a home away from home for its guests, and the lobby comes complete with a fireplace, television, home cinema and complimentary internet access.

The facilities

The restaurant at Can Serola serves daily breakfast and lunch menus of traditional Catalonian tapas and snacks. Dinner is served only during the weekends. For outdoor activities, the surrounding Natural Park is a great for hiking and even provides facilities for horse riding and bicycle rental. For relaxation, the boutique hotel has an onsite sauna, steam room, and outdoor jacuzzi. Choose between a soothing dip in the natural pool or the swimming pool.

The rooms

The eight guestrooms at Can Serola have traditional stone walls and shuttered windows on its exterior. Each guestroom of the boutique hotel features individual ethnic designs, using Moroccan and Indian decorative items, warm tone textiles and dark wood furniture.

Press Quotes

"Imagine a cedar-shingled lodge designed by, say, Mies van der Rohe, with floor-to-ceiling windows, decks built around the trees and trellised walkways marking off your own little fiefdom from its neighbour." Conde Nast Traveller 06

Come for

  • The rooms: huge, free-standing lodges, private and romantic
  • The Bathhouse Spa: indigenous ingredients, water from local springs
  • Heated outdoor pool
  • Lots to do, from riding to mojito-making

Not suitable for

  • Those not fond of lots of natural light and indoor-outdoor living

Children

Calistoga Ranch provides a family ‘grazing package’ of basic groceries on arrival for snacks. Some lodges have pull-out sofa beds to accommodate kids. There is no children's menu, but high chairs are provided. Babysitting services are offered, but at a price.

Eating in

Delicious, unpretentious American-esque food at the Lakehouse; stunning wine lists; and the option to dine in-room. The menu consists of organic ingredients from the farmers in Napa Valley and Northern California.
