“Beautifully restored, this 18th-century countryside hotel with only 10 rooms is truly a place for idylls and gastronomes alike.”

At the very heart of the Coteaux Varois vineyards, super-chef Alain Ducasse has breathed new life into the small boutique hotel Hostellerie de l’Abbaye de La Celle, a country inn on the site of a royal Benedictine abbey.

The facilities

Hostellerie de l’Abbaye de La Celle boasts beautiful gardens, a magnificent veranda and a fabulous outdoor pool.

Inside, the restaurant serves authentic Provencal food that is sourced from local markets and the boutique hotel’s beautiful vegetable garden. The kitchen team is led by Benoît Witz, who was awarded a Michelin star in 2006. Two set menus are cooked every day, as well as a whole host of traditional and imaginative à la carte suggestions.

The menu changes with the seasons: in spring, for example, you may be served zucchini and crispy bacon; in summer: a brightly coloured fruit farandole with local cherries, or deliciously stuffed farcis with a crisp garden salad; in autumn, a duck pressée with foie gras; in winter: of course, famous French truffles.

The boutique hotel’s selection of wines is a perfect match to the excellent food. Guests may pick from a rack of luxury options, from the silky red Château Trians with its blackcurrant and wild cherry notes, to fruity white Château Margillière.

The rooms

This 18th-century boutique hotel has ten air-conditioned bedrooms, each individually named after one of the plants growing in the garden: Eucalyptus, Mulberry Tree, Chestnut Tree, Wisteria, Blackberry Bush and Rose Garden.

The luxury General de Gaulle suite and are the namesakes of their famous historic guests. The rooms at the boutique hotel have charming views of the park or the market square, and all are equipped with satellite television and Wi-Fi. The Beguinage contains five rooms with private gardens, opening onto the vineyard of the Maison des vins des Coteaux Varois.
