If you want to combine sun-worshipping, a spot of luxury and the organic, home-grown food that comes with Balearic agroturismo, Son Bernadinet in Mallorca is the boutique hotel for you. The hotel spans 42 hectares of manicured lawns, almond groves and orchards of orange and lemon trees. The old Mallorcan finca is surrounded by immaculate beds of English roses and blue irises. Interiors are elegant and considered as they’ve been designed by local architect Toni Esteva who owns the Convent de la Missio in Palma and the Son Gener in Sant Llorenç. His eclectic style mixes Picasso prints and Isamu Noguchi lamps in the library with Mediterranean pot plants and a classic Sixties wood-burning stove in one of the three salons. Son Bernadinet does the ‘modern rustic’ look so well that this boutique hotel is a popular venue for fashion shoots in the winter months.
The facilities
Guests spend most of their time round the elegant, green-tiled pool in the grounds or reading under the shady, wisteria-clad pergola beside it. But the organic food is the big draw at Son Bernadinet. Chickens provide free-range eggs for breakfast served with freshly-baked bread and freshly-squeezed orange juice from the orchard. Lunch consists of simple salads and Spanish tortillas, and chef offers two main courses for dinner using seasonal produce. Lettuce, tomatoes, artichokes, potatoes, strawberries and herbs are all grown on-site.
The rooms
The 11 rooms at Son Bernadinet are simple, elegant, white interiors. Spacious and light, they all have their own terraces. The large bathrooms are clad in craggy travertine marble and all have a shower and a bath.
