Grand Hotel Cocumella

by Graham Reid

The Jesuits who built this place in the 16th century - it was converted to a hotel in 1822 - obviously brought a sense of humour with them: the place is named for the nymph Colomelide

Residing in Sorrento, a town of legends and gardens, the five-star luxury Grand Hotel Cocumella sits atop a dramatic cliff – offering views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius beyond. Set within a century-old park, this oasis of tranquillity has been the destination for such distinguished travellers as Goethe, Anderson, Freud, the Duke of Wellington and many more.
Redesigned from the original hotel a decade ago, the hotel has become something discreetly opulent - it is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group - where every room is different. Put simply, Cocumella stands as a retreat from the world where you are left to enjoy the quiet of the rooms and dining areas, the extensive wine cellar and gourmet menu. Cocumella provides an effortless blend of sophistication and casual ambience.

The facilities
Grand Hotel Cocumella has 44 elegant air-conditioned bedrooms and six suites charmingly furnished in the local tradition with antiques. Special features range from a seaside solarium and a private chapel for concerts, to Cocumella's own tall ship 'Vera', built in 1880 and used for day cruises along the Amalfi Coast and to Capri. The Scintilla Restaurant, romantically overlooking the park, serves Mediterranean cuisine, accompanied by fine Italian wines. In summer, the Agrumeto presents a relaxed barbecue lunch under the shade of orange trees by the pool. As Goethe discovered in his time, this peaceful spot is the perfect seaside escape.
The rooms
Boasting spacious suites nestled at the bottom of marble halls between gilt-framed mirrors and antique furnishings, this hotel is the apex of luxury. Alongside spacious terraces and an elegant restaurant, there are awe-inspiring views of the Bay of Naples from the white walkway along the edge of the cliff. All suites come fresh with bubbling Jacuzzis.
