Who stays here

This is the best place to stay in Exeter. It's funky, with fun, off-beat designs - guests tend to be young, creative and easygoing.

Come for

  • Great rates - it's very good value
  • Dotty, fun, offbeat decor

Not suitable for

  • Design purists
  • Those seeking a sleek, muted, business-like style

Children

Children are welcome to stay at the hotel. There is not a regular babysitting service, but the staff can arrange a babysitter for guests. There are extra beds for the rooms and interconecting rooms for families. There is also a children's menu in the hotel restaurant.

Eating in

Cafe Paradiso is light and airy and serves up an undemanding menu of light Italian foods; pizza is great (they have their own wood-burning oven.) Last orders 9.30; room service round the clock. Downstairs there is a lounge-club with a full bar.

"Hotel Barcelona is the place to stay if you are in Exeter”…

“The look is kitsch Gaudí, with bright checked bedspreads, peacock-blue, mosaic-tile bathrooms and curly ironwork. Food (pizza, salads) and prices are reasonable and in the basement is Kino, a private members' club open to guests." Conde Nast Traveller

"Bright and retro-tastic: more than meets the eye"

Alias Hotel Barcelona boutique hotel explodes with eclectic modern furniture, jewel-toned fabrics, striking light fixtures and bold pop-art, fitting for the likes of Dali and Gaudi. All that seems to remain from the former 19th- century Eye Infirmary is the red brick exterior and sky-high ceilings. Conveniently located near Exeter Cathedral and underground passages, this hip boutique hotel attracts a young crowd with its artsy flair and laid-back staff.

The facilities

The boutique hotel is known for its incredible restaurant and bar facilities, drawing in locals, businessmen, and other travellers alike to the gourmet dishes and ever-popular cocktail menu. Kino stands out as a super slick 50s style cocktail bar and lounge. In 2005 Kino was named by the Independent as one of the UK’s top 50 Cocktail Bars. Alias Hotel Barcelona also boasts a restaurant called Café Paradiso, which features Mediterranean fare with ingredients locally sourced from Devon. The boutique hotel also comes with several amenities like high speed internet access, a meeting and convention centre, 24 hour room service, and available parking.

The rooms

The boutique hotel’s 46 rooms are all individually designed, but generally include quirky details like filigree-framed mirrors, rosy patchwork quilts and blue bathroom mosaics. Each room of the Alias Hotel Barcelona achieves a pleasant homey ambiance with a bright mix of retro and modern decorative items. Even the former operating theatre at the boutique hotel has been converted to an appealing and comfortable room. Rooms vary in size from a single to a large king room.
