Nothing sums up a hotel like a first impression. In this case it was the vision of a fat man in raybans, wearing a white towelling dressing gown and chewing on a large cigar as he stared out to sea from his beachside table in the middle of the morning, that set the tone for this visit. The Santiburi’s ethos is big is beautiful and opulent is even better. The pool is the biggest on the island, the rooms are virtual cottages, the grounds could comfortably accommodate a football pitch or two, and if you’re too tired to lay your own towel on a lounger, then there’s always someone hovering nearby, ready to do it for.
Despite the obvious expenditure, the Santiburi is looking a little worn around the edges; some of the room interiors could do with a lick of paint and given the piles of illegal DVD’s on sale in nearby Chaweng it seems somewhat anachronistic to still be offering video players for entertainment. That said, the beach is one of the most peaceful on Koh Samui, the spa is excellent and the food served in the resort’s Sala Thai restaurant is amongst the best Thai on the island.
