The Grand Hotel Tremezzo sits rather grandly at the half way point between Como and Colico – the very centre of the western arm of Lake Como. Tremezzo is the closest village to Cadenabbia which is one of the lake’s main ferry points and as the hotel stands right beside the main road that curves around the lake, traffic can be a nuisance when the windows are open in the busy summer months.
Don’t think of staying here unless you’re agile enough to handle a hefty flight of stairs up to the reception area. Another long flight of stairs will take you up to the pool and the garden that rises on a hill behind the building. Lounging around on the lawn beside the pool you will have good views of the mountains but the hotel itself blocks a direct view of the lake. Luckily, from this height, you will feel completely distanced from the town and traffic.
Inside the hotel is formal and grand and the designers have successfully given a twist of old-fashioned luxury to a turn of the century building.
