A design hotel in Hamburg that's no wallflower. Lightboxes in the atrium, lots of dark wood and granite, orchids and red leather banquettes – from the minute you step through the door of the Side Hotel, the whole place positively screams Designer.
Hamburg is the centre of Germany’s advertising and media industry, and the Side Hotel has cornered the market – product launches, press conferences and power-broking meetings are all held here, in the impeccably minimalist conference rooms or 25 metres up in the painfully cool ‘sky lounge’.
The bar and restaurant of this design hotel feature leather cushions, video presentations inlaid into the tables, staff in severe sharply-tailored black outfits and infinite varieties of sushi. Clientele are all über-hip media types in designer outfits, impressing their clients and each other with their air of bored insouciance in the face of so much luxury. Staff are as cool as their customers, but hyper-efficient and friendly.
The rooms
The rooms are decorated nicely in neutral creams and beiges, with state-of-the art television equipment and internet connections. If a lamp, a rug or a soap dish should take your fancy, it’s all for sale directly from the design hotel.
The suites on the top floor are truly stunning, each huge, white-painted and each themed on a different colour, some featuring dining tables for twelve, others with steam baths. The spa and swimming pool in the basement are also magnificent, shimmering in primary colours and incredibly tranquil, especially if you use them during the week when there is rarely anyone there.
The most entertaining part about doing this is the ride down in the lift, clad in a white bathrobe, with a collection of blue-suited executives on their way to their next meeting…
