Of just ten rooms here, only four have views, so despite the rock edge position of this hotel, most guests only get the benefit while eating in the restaurant. This serves fine food to a constantly replenished horde of day trippers up from Nice and Monaco, or group tourists who have had their fill of fragrance at Fragonard, the local perfumerie factory. The trappings of this hotel are faux-medieval – which is a shame, as it seems unnecessary in this real medieval building. The lack of a pool seems a handicap, especially in relation to its vastly superior cousin along the rock, the Chevre d’Or. Rates are on the steep side, as they have to be with only ten rooms. Staff are reluctant to let reviewers wander round – well, no wonder.

Eating in
The award-winning, (and very expensive) Michelin-starred Belle Epoque Chèvre d'Or has been acknowledged by many as one of the most romantic restaurants in the world thanks to the views, the small, private decks, the exceptional menu and slick service.
